The Pre-Eminent Art Fair Turns 20

Art Basel Miami launched 20 years ago amidst a long list of challenges on all fronts. The established Art Basel (Switzerland) fair and organization took the unexpected step of launching a secondary fair in the middle of winter, right in the heart of Miami Beach. What transpired over two decades had major impact to art fairs of the world and to Miami in many ways.

Early on in the process, local developers saw new opportunity to encourage high net worth travelers to stop through Miami early in the winter season to take in some art, enjoy lavish parties, and consider an array of investment opportunities be they in local real estate, artwork on exhibit, or as an ideal backdrop to network with their clients and high value relationships. The city of Miami Beach and Miami both saw increasing impact in terms of tourist dollars and yet another positive global branding opportunity.
